The Process

Shearing the Wool

It all begins high in the Atlas Mountains, where skilled men and local shepherds carefully shear their sheep by hand at the start of summer.

This age-old tradition, passed down through generations, protects the animals from the heat and yields the soft, natural wool that becomes the heart of every TazRugs masterpiece.

Cleaning & Drying

Washed in clear mountain water, the wool keeps its natural softness. After washing, each bundle is pressed and gently beaten on stone or wooden surfaces to remove excess water.

Then left to dry under the warm Taznakht sun. A pure, chemical-free process that leaves the fibers fresh, soft, and ready for the next step.

Brushing & Preparing

Once dry, the wool is carefully brushed by the women using traditional tools called “Imchden” in Amazigh, meaning “the brushes.”

This age-old technique, passed down through generations, removes impurities and aligns the fibers naturally. The delicate process ensures each strand is smooth and even, ready for consistent spinning.

Spinning the Wool

Once brushed, the wool is carefully spun by hand using traditional tools and techniques passed down through generations.

Skilled women twist and roll the fibers into strong, even yarn, forming the threads that will create the intricate patterns of each rug. This patient, hands-on process transforms soft wool into durable yarn, ready for weaving.

Dyeing the Wool

The spun yarn is dyed using either natural pigments extracted from plants or industrial dyes, depending on the customer’s choice, combined with traditional methods to create the vibrant tones that bring each rug to life.

Skilled artisans carefully immerse the yarn in warm, richly colored baths, allowing each fiber to absorb the hue evenly.

Weaving & Finishing

The dyed yarn is then woven by hand on traditional looms, where skilled artisans bring each rug’s intricate patterns to life.

Each woman may sit for weeks or even months, depending on the rug’s size and design, carefully crafting every knot and detail.

Once weaving is complete, the rugs are trimmed, washed, and finished to reveal their vibrant colors and soft, luxurious texture — ready to become a timeless piece in your home.
